Description:Opened by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, Number One Market Street is seen as a ‘signal of the town’s re-birth’.  Situated adjacent to the historic Town Hall, traditional detailing combined with clean design provides a welcome new landmark building to the town. The state-of-the-art building is one of many new and tremendous opportunities being created locally. Working with the design team, we were responsible for procuring the site investigation and the full design of the foundations, steel frame, structural fabric and associated civil design. Despite the site having varied, but shallow ground conditions and relic cellars, the foundations were all simple concrete pads. The major challenge on this project was the fast track design programme, coupled with designing radial steelwork, with limited internal columns.
Paul Waite Associates undertook the full structural design from concept to working drawings, civil works included section agreements, road widening scheme, sewer diversions and detailed drainage scheme.
Adverse ground conditions and complex building geometry have proved challenging, but using both linear and radial structure has provided an efficient structural system.
