Firm Helps Rebuild City - 13 March 2007

A Cross Hills Consultancy is starting work on the first of two multi-million pound residential projects that will transform a run down area of Sheffield city centre.

Paul Waite Associates will provide civil and structural engineering expertise to the £14 million Upper Allen Street Project.

Aimed at Sheffield's growing young professional population, the project will convert an overgrown patch of land with a number of dilapidated buildings, into a block of 131 private one-bedroom apartments.

Paul Waite Associates has also been commissioned for a neighbouring £27 million Edward Street development designed by Race Cottam Partnership.

The scheme consists of four apartment blocks, ranging from four to eight storeys. One of these will provide 32 private apartments, while the other three will offer accommodation for more than 400 students. Both projects are earmarked for completion in 2008

Paul Waite, managing director, said: "Both designs presented significant engineering challenges, particularly in managing the considerable height difference across the Edward Street site.

"We look forward to giving a new lease of life to this neglected part of the city centre."
